Computing
KS1 Computing Overview for 2024-25
Computing at Minet Infant School
At Minet, our vision for computing is to help children develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in a digital world. Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, encourage creativity, and teach children how to use technology responsibly. We want our pupils to feel inspired, confident, and safe when using technology in school and beyond.
“Raising Aspirations” is at the heart of everything we do, and our computing lessons aim to show children how technology can help them achieve their goals.
Year 1: Technology in Our Lives
In Year 1, children learn how technology is part of their everyday lives. They explore how to create images using programs like Word, helping them to understand how computers can be used for communication and creativity.
Year 2: Coding and Programming
In Year 2, children take their first steps into coding and programming. Using simple tools, they learn how to create basic algorithms and solve problems. This helps them understand how computers work and introduces them to exciting possibilities for the future.
Online Safety for All
Online safety is important for everyone. All year groups learn about staying safe online through our new online safety topic in the spring term as well as during the first lesson of every term. We also observe Safer Internet Day where a special visitor talks to the children about using the internet responsibly.
Computing at Minet Infant School helps children:
- Use technology in their daily lives.
- Understand and create simple programs.
- Learn how to stay safe online.
- Build creativity and curiosity about the digital world.
We aim to prepare our pupils to use technology confidently and responsibly, giving them the tools they need for a bright future.
SPRING
Year 1 has been focusing on coding this half term.
They have learnt how to use the Beebots to program a code.
They have also used purple mash to write their own code.
Year 1 has also continued their work on online safety, sorting out information that should be private and information that should be public.
Year 2 have been working hard on researching and creating leaflets on the rainforest. They have learnt how to use a search engine safely and know what to look out for when searching for information.
Online Safety at Minet Infant School
This term, as part of our online safety topic, we had a special visit from ChildNet, who taught us all about staying safe online. They shared important tips on how to use the internet safely, such as keeping personal information private and asking an adult for help if something doesn’t feel right. Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic time learning through fun activities and engaging discussions. The session helped everyone feel more confident about making smart choices online.
AUTUMN
Year 1
Year 1 have been learning all about the different types of technology in the world around them. They spotted various types of technology on their walk through Hayes town and Minet Country park. In preparation for the new year, Year 1 have also used the Microsoft Word shapes function to create pictures for an advent calender.
Year 2
Year 2 have been using purple mash to code. This term children have learnt all about what an object is and how to make it move by writing an algorithm. Children have enjoyed creating different scenes and adding objects that match. Children have learnt how to debug code by identifying the wrong algorithm.
2023
Algorithms in Year 1
Our Year 1 Pupils have been enjoying learning about algorithms using the Beebots. They understand that a Beebot is a robot and we can program it to move!
Year 2
Children in Year 2 have been learning about algorithms and using Lego to create and follow an algorithm. They are now going to learn about coding to create and debug simple programs.
