Music Curriculum Overview 2025-26:

What do children say about their learning in music lessons?

“I have music lessons at home because I enjoy music in school. I am learning how to play the piano. In school, I learnt how to play the crotchet and beam note. I like learning new songs and my favourite is the song about the white horse. I would like to be part of a music group as soon as I can play the piano very well.”

“Music means learning about how to play different sounds and learning new songs. I listen to music at home. My favourite instrument is the drum because it is easy to play. I have learnt about Bob Marley with the music teacher. She also taught us Christmas songs.” 

Lariyah (Yr. 1) 

“In music, we do singing and play musical instruments. I get excited when it is music because I like playing the instruments. I am very good at playing the triangle. I want to use the shaker next time. I like learning the Christmas songs.” 

Zamir (Yr.1) 

“Music means it is singing time. We learnt about the ballet show called the ‘Nutcracker.’ I enjoyed the story. When I go to the Church, I sing there. We sing songs about God. In school, the music teacher taught us how to use musical instruments. I used the tambourine. I like the ‘Hello’ song.”

Music Appreciation Day 2024

On Thursday 20th June 2024 all children and staff at Minet Infant and Nursery school took part in a Music Appreciation Day.  

The day was filled with a variety of activities such as making of musical instruments, learning about British musicians, creating their own music and performing for parents/ carers. Year One and Two children also took part in music lessons and experienced making music using junk in a percussion workshop. 

It was a day filled with the sound of music and here are some of the responses by the children about the day. 

“I like that we all made shakers using pasta, chickpea and rice.” (Reception child) 

“I liked it when the mums and dads came in and we were singing to them.” (Reception child) 

“I really enjoyed the drumming session this morning. We learnt different beats and came up with some of our own.” (Year One child) 

“My favourite activity was drawing how Benjamin Britten’s music made me feel.” (Year One child) 

“I enjoyed creating our own music on the iPad as what I created sounded familiar.” (Year Two child) 

“I enjoyed that we had 3 music lessons and learning about a composer named Gustov Holst .” (Year Two child)
