Year 2 pedestrian training

Our Year 2 children have been developing their pedestrian crossing and road safety skills through discussion and practise.

Children practised holding hands and walking safely along a pavement, keeping a safe distance away from the kerb. We discussed the correct steps to take before deciding to cross a road safely using the green cross code procedure as a helpful tool to refer back to.

Whilst walking, children were encouraged to point out potential hazards and also appropriate crossing places like zebra crossings. We discussed when it may be necessary to cross where obstructions (such as parked cars) can stop you from seeing the road clearly. For crossing between parked cars, children were taught how to check the parked cars were not about to move off. It was then demonstrated to them how to position themselves so that their feet were inline with the car wheels for a good view of the road but not too far out into the road, then using the green cross procedure to safely cross the road.

After much discussion and learning children were able to identify safe places to cross and were able to independently cross roads safely.
