In Year 2 we encourage greater independence from the children as we guide them through the final year of Key Stage 1. We continue to teach daily sessions of maths and literacy and provide phonics support for any children as appropriate.
We aim for all our children to be fluent in number bonds to 20 as well as knowing their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Through our Minet Maths approach we start with practical activities, moving to pictorial and recording in maths books. We provide a challenge within each activity to enable children to show or practice their conceptual understanding in an out of context situation.
Our autumn curriculum details can be downloaded here:
Our coverage of Science, Art, Design Technology, History, Geography and IT is delivered through meaningful topics and introduced with a half termly question. ‘What makes London great?’ our autumn topic enables the children to understand the history of our capital city. They embark on a tour of London where they see the major sites and have lunch at Trafalgar Square. This immersive experience inspired the children’s learning and enabled them to produce some excellent writing.
During spring Year 2 considered ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them!’ Part of this learning involved understanding habitats and the children created diorama’s of specific habitats for their own fantastic beast – once they had created them and researched their needs!
We teach PSHE through circle time and also as appropriate, responding to questions from children, sometimes about World events.
Our PE focus in Year 2 is on catching, kicking and striking with greater ball control. Team games skills continue as the children learn net game skills through Basketball and Football. Indoor PE develops gymnastic skills – exploring climbing, travelling and rolling – and apparatus. The dance module draws on cultural and topic influences and during the summer term Year 2 learn the skills of Carnival dance moves!
